  abstract   Vararia granulosa (Fr.) Laurila is a name which cannot be applied to the fungus for which it is now commonly used. Fries (1838, 1874) considered the element representing our Vararia only a marginal part of his broad concept of Grandinia granulosa (Pers. ex Fr.) Fr. As there is no legitimate name for the fungus in question, Vararia borealis Pouz. spec. nov. is proposed for it here.
