Abstract

During a study of cucumber pathogens in Bohemia, Alternaria pluriseptata (Karst. et Har.) Jørstad was isolated from leaf spots of cucumbers. Since 1972, the fungus has been regularly recorded in cucumber-growing areas such as Všetaty, Mělník and Prague. Isolates were cultured on carrot agar and tested on three cucumber cultivars: Nejlepší ze všech, Znojemské nakládačky, and Spotresisting. Infections were successful. The fungus is problematic to classify. On host plants, it produces typical Alternaria conidia, but cultures produce spherical conidia resembling the genus Ulocladium. Virulence decreased with prolonged cultivation.
