Although previously reported in the literature, the occurrence of Clathrus ruber in Czechoslovakia was not confirmed until the author's collection in 1974 in a thermophilic oak-hornbeam forest in central Slovakia. This site was proposed for protection as the first fungal nature reserve in the country. The species' distribution and earlier reports are discussed.
