Meeting with Soviet mycologists. The article discusses the activities and institutions of Soviet mycologists as observed during a two-month stay in Moscow, Kyiv, and Leningrad. It describes challenges due to lack of a unified mycological society and absence of dedicated journals. Special mention is given to Dr. N. M. Šemachanova and her work on mycorrhiza at the Microbiological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and to Dr. L. A. Beljakova for her work on fungal culture preservation.
