The study investigates the contribution of fungus and alga to the gelatinous matrix in Collema lichens. The gelatinous material contains chitin, not cellulose. The slime produced by fungal hyphae is anisotropic, whereas algal slime is isotropic within the thallus. The work concludes that the fungus predominantly produces the gelatinous matrix, shaping the lichen’s morphology, with the alga playing a limited role.
