Amylocystis lapponica is a notable montane fungus growing on fallen conifers in primeval forests around 1000 m elevation. Originally collected in large numbers in Carpathian Ukraine, it was later found in Šumava and Slovakia. The fungus produces large, juicy fruitbodies that can drip liquid, often found on the underside of dead trunks. It has thick-walled cystidia, amyloid and metachromatic, and emits a characteristic smell.
