Some Europeanspecies of the genusCrepidotus were revised with regard to their taxonomical value. Crepidotus applanatusvar. subglobiger sensu Senn-Irletis described as the new species C. stenocystis Pouzar, C. acerinus Vacek is included in C. mollis (Schaeff.: Fr.) Staude, Agaricus zahlbruckneri Beckis confirmed as a synonym of C. cesatii (Rabenh.) Sacc., C. caspari Velen, is merged with C. lundellii Pilát (a younger synonym) and C. lundellii var.subglobisporus (Pilát) Pilátis hence combined as C. caspari var. subglobisporus (Pilát) Pouzar. C. sambuciVelen, is considered a dubious name.

abstract
The taxonomic and nomenclatural problems considering Agaricus porreus and A. prasiosmus are discussed. As a result both names must be considered nomina dubia. The new species Gymnopus herinkii Antonin and Noordel. is described to replace “Collybia” porrea sensu auct.

A collection of Agaricus campester L.: Fr. s.l., made on a little sand dune shows a number of misformed spores which are shortly analyzed as to their dimensions and forms. The weather of the days preceeding the collection have been sufficiently dry and warm to be hypothetically responsible of the misformation of the spores.

Nine species and infraspecific taxa of Higher Basidiomycetesare recorded as new, remarkable and rare for Israel. One species is undescribed: Agaricus herinkii sp. nov., related to A. nevoi S. Wasser, A. pratulorum Romagn. and A. gennadii (Chat, et Boud.) P. D. Orton. Macowanites galileensis Mos., Binyam. et Hersh., Agaricus bonii S. Wasser and A. nevoi S. Wasser are endemics of Israel. Melanophyllum haematospermum (Bull.: Fr.) Kreisel, Agaricus geesteranii Bas et Heinem., A. xanthodermus Gen. var. lepiotoides R. Mre, A. gennadii (Chat, et Boud.) P. D. Orton var. microsporus (Bohus) S. Wasser and A. pequinii (Boud.) Konr. et Maubl. are new for Israel and some of them - for Asiaor for the Near East. Synonyms, detailed descriptions, locations and dates of collections in Israel, ecological peculiarities, general distribution, as well as taxonomic remarks to all nine taxa are given.

abstract
The author managed to find a very rare species of agaric, Agaricus elvensis Berk. et Br., in the arboretum of Mlyňany (Institute of Dendrobiology, Slovak Academy of Sciences). This fairly strongly reddening agaric grows typically in clusters (similar to Pholiota squarrosa). The author compares the original description of the fungus with the concepts of later authors.

Hypsizygus tessulatus (Bull. ex Fr.) Sing. is redescribed from American material and compared with some European data on this species. Description of three European species of the Hohenbuehelia petaloides group are provided and slight differences between European and American collections of H. petaloides are pointed out. It is suggested that a species typified by a Mexican collection, H. recedens spec. nov., may be part of Ricken’s concept of Pleurotus geogenius. H. portegna is described from both American and European collections and closely related species are discussed. Pseudoclitocybe beschidica spec. nov. is compared with European and American representatives of this genus. Since the type species of Nothopanus must be transferred to Pleurotus, the European representative of this genus has to be known (again) as Pleurocybella porrigens (Pers. ex Fr.) Sing.

abstract
The first pilot major mushroom house in Czechoslovakia was founded in Gottwaldov in 1948. The first modern mushroom farm, since 1965 having used a 3-zone system of cultivation in trayes, was built in Babice in South Moravia. The production of the cultivated mushrooms [Agaricus bisporus (Lg.) Sing, and A. bitorquis (Quél.) Sacc.] in Czechoslovakia has been low so far (1300 T), however, new growing plants with larger production capacity are under construction. The development of edible fungi production was stimulated by research results gained in the Institute of Microbiology (Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences), in the Mycological Station and other institutes where physiology and ecology of cultivated fungi [Agaricus spp., Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq. ex Fr.) Kummer etc.] and various problems of applied research are studied.

A fruit body of Agaricus arvensis Schaeff. ex Fr. was found with deformed lamellae and complete sterility. The deformity was likely caused by the bacterium Bacillus cereus Frankland et Frankland. A dry specimen is preserved at the National Museum in Prague (PR 714357).

Specimens of Agaricus bernardii (Quél.) Sacc., collected by the author on July 7, 1971, in northern Mongolia at the western foothills of the Khentey Mountains (ca. 1500 m), are described and illustrated in color. This species, described from Western Europe and typically growing in saline coastal meadows, was also found on saline soils in Hungary. The Mongolian material matches Western European specimens and confirms the presence of the species in steppe habitats. It has not yet been found in Czechoslovakia. A previously misidentified illustration from Bohemia actually represents Agaricus squamuliferus var. caroli. Vasilkov’s concept of A. bernardii likely refers to a collective species encompassing relatives from section Agaricus (= Sect. Campestres).

A second collection of Agaricus osecanus Pilát was made in Bohemia by Emil Dlouhý on 27 August 1970 under Sambucus nigra near Prague. The specimen matched the original description, supporting the validity of the species, which differs from Agaricus arvensis by its smaller, more globose spores and other features.

Psalliota nigricans Velenovský 1921, described from specimens found near Veltrusy in 1915, was in 1951 identified by the author with material collected in Prague-Střešovice in 1934 and published as Agaricus meleagris var. nigricans (Velen.) Pilát. Dr. V. Denkstein found many beautiful specimens of this fungus in 1967 at Budeč hill near Zákolany (Central Bohemia), which are identical with the Střešovice material but differ in several characters from the original description of Psalliota nigricans. Therefore the author describes these specimens as a new species, Agaricus velenovskyi Pilát, close to A. meleagris but distinct. It might be very similar or identical with Psalliota grisea (Pearson) Essette.

abstract
The contribution deals with the issue of specific or subspecific epithets published by various authors in different forms, alberti/albertii or pilati/pilatii, and currently mostly maintained with the termination -ii in official repositories for names, especially the MycoBank and Index Fungorum databases. A view into the protologues of each name dedicated to Albert Pilát clearly shows that different terminations have been applied in different periods, and that relevant recommendations of the International Code of Nomenclature have also evolved over time. The orthographic variants alberti and pilati are in principle correct, based on the Latinised form of Pilát’s full name. Thus the original names of the involved taxa are to be maintained or resurrected if such epithets were given in their protologues. However, names later formed with the epithets albertii or pilatii appear to be in accordance with the provisions in force at the time. For a complete view of the topic, some examples of seemingly similar epithets created in different ways are mentioned for comparison, and the issue of interpretation of relevant recommendations of the Code is discussed in general. Finally, different approaches to nomenclatural stability are stated as a matter to be resolved in the upcoming Madrid Code.

abstract
Macrofungal explorations conducted in several forested areas of the East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi Districts of Meghalaya, India, unveiled two noteworthy members of Scleroderma and Tricholoma. After careful morphological characterisation, literature consultation, and molecular phylogenetic analysis, the species were identified as Scleroderma yunnanense and Tricholoma olivaceum, taxa recently described from China. The local tribal communities highly value these species as food. Here, we provide comprehensive morphological descriptions complemented with illustrations, comparisons with similar species, and nrITS-based phylogenetic analyses. Scleroderma yunnanense and Tricholoma olivaceum are reported for the first time from India.

abstract
A new record of the rare agaric species Gymnopilus stabilis from the Czech Republic is described morphologically and genetically. The basidiomata show good agreement with the recently published epitype and diagnostic characters of the species. While the robustness of the basidiomata, the presence of a pink hue, and a distinct sweetish aromatic smell are typical characters, though not always present, the predominantly warm orange colour of adult pilei seems to be stable character. The combination of fleshy basidiomata and typical pileus colour distinguishes G. stabilis from G. penetrans/hybridus and G. decipiens, which are taxa sometimes confused with G. stabilis. Comparison of the nearest ITS rDNA sequences from GenBank confirmed the identity of our record and showed that the species is distributed not only in Europe and Siberia, but also in Pakistan and India. The ecological characterisation of G. stabilis is updated, showing that it is a saprotrophic species on dead wood of conifers, both Pinus and Picea, but also a facultative anthracophilous fungus able to grow on burnt wood and ash.

abstract
A study of the radiocaesium activity in fruitbodies of 54 mushroom species from 18 locations of Polis'ke Forestry complex was carried out with gamma spectrometry. In some mushroom samples, strontium was determined with a radiochemical method. However, the mushrooms accumulated 137Cs one to three orders of magnitude more actively than 90Sr. The highest levels of 137Cs activity, recorded in Lactarius rufus, Imleria badia, Paxillus involutus and Cortinarius praestans from the forest area at the settlement of Polis'ke in 1998 and 2000, exceeded 1 MBq/kg dry mass. By 2018, the activity of 137Cs in 60.0% and 37.84% of mushroom samples in the Zelenopolyans'ke and Steshchyns'ke Forestries, respectively, exceeded the maximum permissible level valid in Ukraine, 2,500 Bq/kg dry mass. Significant differences in the levels of contamination of the same species are noted not only at different locations, but also within the same sampling site, which is probably associated with a complex of factors which are difficult to assess, such as extremely heterogeneous nature of contamination, depth of mycelium in the soil layer, and microclimatic conditions in the place where individual fruitbodies grow. The data obtained indicate a persistent risk to the population due to internal exposure as a result of uncontrolled consumption of wild mushrooms in this region. In 2018, the potential equivalent dose per year (contribution of 137Cs only) reached maximum values of 0.239 mSv in Suillus spp. and 0.130 mSv in Imleria badia from Zelenopolyans'ke Forestry.

abstract
Competition between 31 macromycete species and two harmful micromycetes Aspergillus niger and Penicillium polonicum was evaluated using dual-culture plate assay. All investigated fungi, except for Inonotus obliquus and Lepista luscina, possessed different levels of antagonistic activity against the tested micromycetes. Hypsizygus marmoreus and Lyophyllum shimeji were inactive against A. niger. Morchella esculenta and Oxyporus obducens were passive in the case of co-growth with P. polonicum. The study of fungal interactions showed variability in types of reactions and level of their visualisation. Co-cultivation of the studied species resulted in the following reactions: deadlock after mycelial contact and at a distance, partial or complete replacement after initial deadlock on contact. In general, the studied macromycetes showed moderate activity against the two micromycetes, as 11 species showed active and 7 species moderate antagonism. Results revealed higher antagonistic activity of macromycetes against P. polonicum than in A. niger co-cultures. Wood-decaying species Ganoderma lucidum and Trametes versicolor were the most active fungi against the two tested micromycetes with a maximal antagonism index. These findings provide valuable insights which can be further explored by means of in vivo assays to find a suitable agent for the biocontrol of diseases or spoilage caused by A. niger and P. polonicum.

abstract
Hypomyces perniciosus and Cladobotryum mycophilum are mycoparasitic fungi infecting Agaricus bisporus and causing wet bubble and cobweb diseases, respectively. In this work, the role of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by these fungal mycoparasites in the suppression of A. bisporus was investigated. The VOCs of H. perniciosus and C. mycophilum effectively reduced the mycelial growth of A. bisporus by 60% and 73% after 5 days of incubation, respectively, compared to that of the control as assessed by the two-sealed-base-plates assay. Further, the VOCs of H. perniciosus and C. mycophilum were collected in a headspace solid-phase microextraction procedure, and their components analysed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Ethanol was identified as the major volatile component in H. perniciosus and C. mycophilum. Ethanol vapour significantly retarded the growth of A. bisporus in an in vitro assay. The results of this study suggest that ethanol produced by H. perniciosus and C. mycophilum could be involved in the suppression of A. bisporus.

abstract
The article presents data on the first record of the rare wood-rotting species of the Coprinopsis strossmayeri aggregate in Ukraine. A full description of its macro- and micromorphological features as well as an original drawing are provided. Morphological characters and data on mycelial growth on different agar media are reported. The growth optimum was observed on compost agar medium. Mycelial colonies of C. strossmayeri are white, cottony, very dense with fluffy aerial mycelium growing in concentric zones. Colonies have a characteristic yellow pigmentation and stain the agar yellowish. Microscopic features of vegetative mycelia are described. In the mycelium of C. strossmayeri, spherical structures inside storage hyphae, clamp connections, anastomoses, chlamydospores, and crystals on hyphae were observed.

abstract
In the period from 2017 to 2019 a survey of the diversity of fungi in oak forests in the Republic of Kosovo was conducted. The survey included 31 localities, mainly in Quercetum frainetto-cerris and Querco-Carpinetum orientalis communities. As a result of the fieldwork performed in various seasons, a first checklist of fungi from oak forests in the country is provided. A total of 220 taxa (219 species and one forma) were identified. The majority of the identified taxa belong to Basidiomycota (206) and only 14 species to Ascomycota. The paper provides a list of all recorded species with data on locality, altitude, time of collection, forest association and type of substrate. Distribution and ecology of selected rare or threatened species are briefly discussed.

abstract
Termitomyces species are among the most utilised mushrooms in tropical Africa and Asia, with some species having putative medicinal properties. However, data on their diversity, distribution, ethnomycology, biological activities and metabolites are still to be completed, especially in central Africa. During field surveys in the Western Highlands of Cameroon, basidiomes of a species of this fungal genus were collected and morphologically described. The extracts were used to screen and measure some antioxidant compounds and their respective activities, including polyphenols, flavonoids, thiols, DPPH radicals scavenging activity, ferric reducing power (FRAP) and the superoxide dismutase-like (SOD-like) activity in comparison to that of vitamin C. Morphological features allowed identifying this fungal species as Termitomyces reticulatus, which is here reported for the first time from Cameroon. This species is used by locals as food. Mycochemical antioxidant analyses revealed polyphenols as the major antioxidant compounds, followed by flavonoids and thiols. Extracts also showed significant DPPH, FRAP and SOD-like activities, although less strongly than those of vitamin C. The global antioxidant potential of this species is comparable to that of many mushroom species, such as T. heimii and T. microcarpus. Extensive work on other metabolites and biological activities of T. reticulatus are needed for a better description of its potential health benefits, especially in the fight against various human oxidative stress-related diseases.

Melanoleuca strictipes (P. Karst.) Métrod, a species characterised by whitish colours and macrocystidia in the hymenium, has for years been identified as several different species. Based on morphological studies of 61 specimens from eight countries and a phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequences, including type material of M. subalpina and M. substrictipes var. sarcophyllum, we confirm conspecificity of these specimens and their identity as M. strictipes. The lectotype of this species is designated here. The morphological and ecological characteristics of this species are presented.

The authors present a macro- and microscopic description of this species based on a study of material collected at a locality in North Bohemia. Ecology and distribution of this very rare gasteroid fungus are summarised and potential confusion with similar species is discussed.

abstract
The contents of mineral macronutrients (phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium) in forest soil samples, but also in samples of fruit bodies of dominant fungal taxa were analysed. The monitoring took place in three research plots in beech-dominated forests located near the aluminium plant at Žiar nad Hronom (Central Slovakia, Europe). The observed macrofungal taxa have different abilities of accumulating macronutrients. In forest soils, the terrestrial saprotrophic species Clitocybe nebularis accumulated phosphorus, attaining a maximum bioconcentration factor of 160 in the mineral A-horizon and 10.6 in the organic matter soil horizons (O-horizons). The ectomycorrhizal species Xerocomellus chrysenteron was rich in potassium in the A-horizon (181), but also in the O-horizons (18.8). The lignicolous saprotrophic species Polyporus varius accumulated calcium to a small extent in the A-horizon (9.36) and O-horizons (0.64), and magnesium in the A-horizon (14.2) and O-horizons (1.09).

After studying specimens of macro fungi collected in Cuba, ten species of wood-inhabiting agarics were identified belonging to genera Chaetocalathus, Gymnopilus, Hohenbuehelia, Lentinus, Marasmius, Oudemansiella, Pleurotus, and Xeromphalina. Uncommon or rare species include Gymnopilus palmicola, Hohenbuehelia nigra, Marasmius haematocephalus, Pleurotus pulmonarius, and Xeromphalina tenuipes. Other species mentioned in the article are rather abundant or common in Cuba.

Few studies have investigated the relationships between mycodiversity and plant communities in Quercus ilex (holm oak) woodlands. These are unique ecosystems in the Mediterranean basin of high mycological importance. The macrofungi of Q. ilex forests in Liguria, North-Western Italy, were studied: 246 species were observed in 15 permanent plots over four years. Some species were identified as typical of holm oak woodlands, e.g. Hygrophorus russula, Leccinellum lepidum, and Lactarius atlanticus.Correspondence analysis (CA) showed that the main ecological gradients shaping the fungal and plant communities are driven by soil pH and climatic factors. The CA confirms that the minimum sampling area for macrofungi is larger than for plant communities and that aggregation of multiple plots is suitable for data analysis. The data suggest that the higher-taxon approach can be successfully applied also to Q. ilex macrofungi, not only for total species and genus richness, but also within abundance classes. Further investigations are required to better characterise the mycodiversity of Mediterranean holm oak woodlands in relation to human impacts over various scales to plan effective conservation strategies.

For the first time, the rare species Tricholoma borgsjoeënse and T. luridum are reported from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, respectively. Tricholoma borgsjoeënse, a species of the T. terreum group, is unique for its thick, distant and grey lamellae with a lilaceous tinge, dark grey pileus with a tomentose-squamulose surface, yellowing stipe base, and unusually large basidiospores and basidia. It was found in a man-made forest composed of Picea abies with admixed Pinus sylvestris. Tricholoma luridum, recognisable by its olive yellow-green tinges on the pileus, distinctly grey lamellae, uniformly ellipsoid, unusually large spores, and 4-spored basidia, was found in a Picea abies–Corylus avellana forest on calcareous soil. It is compared with T. guldeniae, its North European sibling. Notes on taxonomy, ecology and distribution of both species are added.

abstract
Tricholomopsis osiliensis is a rare, recently described species, known from two Estonian islands in the Baltic Sea. In 2009 it was also found in Dobročský prales virgin forest in Slovakia. Macro– and microcharacters of this collection are presented in detail. The Slovak collection has brighter colours, a more distinctly fibrillose pileus surface, larger and more elongated spores, larger basidia, and more abundant pleurocystidia than the holotype collection. However, a DNA study showed that the Estonian and Slovak collections form a well-supported, not very variable clade. In the light of this finding some differences in macro– and microcharacters are better understood. The darker colours and more pronounced fibrils on the pileus and stipe surface can be attributed to the earlier stage of drying up and ageing of the Slovak fruitbodies. The species has a broader range of spore sizes than was thought before. Its preferable habitats are natural mixed forests, where the fruitbodies appear on fallen trunks of conifers (Picea, Abies).

In this part of the article on dung inhabiting Coprinus species in Ukraine data on new records of fimicolous representatives of the section Coprinus in Ukraine are reported. As a result of the study 9 taxa belonging to the subsections Lanatuli J.E. Lange, Narcotici Uljé et Noordel. and Nivei Citérin were found. Coprinus cordisporus Gibbs, C. foetidellus P.D. Orton, C. pseudoniveus Bender et Uljé, C. pseudoradiatus Kühner et Joss. ex Watling and C. utrifer (Joss.) Watling were collected for the first time in Ukraine. One new variety (C. pachyspermus var. tetrasporus) is described. For each taxon a description and drawings are provided.

The first records of Clitocybula familia from the Czech and Slovak Republics were studied and compared with the type specimen of C. familia var. compressa and several North-American collections of var. familia using macro– and microscopic characters as well as molecular data (LSU rDNA).All the collections were identical. Therefore, there is no need to recognise var. familia and var.compressa, as they represent the same taxon. Detailed macro– and microscopic descriptions are given.In Europe, the species grows on strongly decayed fallen trunks of Abies alba and Picea abies. All four Central-European localities represent valuable old-growth forests. Therefore, this species may be a bioindicator of such environments.

Descriptions, figures of microscopic characters, data on ecology and distribution of four species of Psathyrella section Spadiceae known from the Czech Republic and Slovakia are given. These species are P. spadicea, P. papyracea, P. pygmaea and P. spintrigeroides. Type material of P. variata, P. imleriana, P. olympiana and P. spintrigeroides has been examined and the insufficiently known taxa P. variata, P. imleriana, P. subcernua and P. sarcocephala are discussed. The newly published combination Psathyrella papyracea (Pers.: Fr.) Vašutová is shown to be the correct name for a fungus currently named P. cernua (Vahl: Fr.) Hirsch. An identification key for Psathyrella species with thickwalled cystidia occurring in Central Europe is presented.

abstract
Hydropus atramentosus is a rare lignicolous fungus included in the Red Book and Red List of the Czech Republic and in red lists of 5 other European countries. To date, it has been recorded at 15 localities in the Czech Republic. Most of them are almost pure Fagus forests with rare presence of Picea and/or Abies at lower altitudes or mixed submontane or montane forests composed predominantly of Fagus, Abies and Picea. There is also one record from a man-made Picea forest. H. atramentosus was mostly found at slopes of mountains or hills but also in deep stream valleys in the hilly country. The fungus shows a clear preference for old-growth forests (mostly nature reserves). However, it is rarely found in man-influenced or even man-made stands. Consequently, H. atramentosus cannot be considered a relict species confined exclusively to true virgin forests almost untouched by man but can be used as a bioindicator of conservationally valuable stands (natural vegetation, presence of dead wood of Abies or Picea, stable meso– and microclimate). This conclusion was verified also in the Slovakia and Ukrainian Eastern Carpathians.

The definition of the generic limits of Xerocomus s. l. and particularly the delimitation of this genus from Boletus is very unclear and controversial. During his study of European species of the Boletaceae, the author has come to the conclusion that Xerocomus in a wide concept is a heterogeneous mixture of several groups of species. These groups are separated from each other by different anatomical and some other characters. Also recent molecular studies show that Xerocomus s. l. is not a monophyletic group. In agreement with these facts, the European species of Xerocomus s. l. whose anatomy was studied by the present author are here classified into the following, more distinctly delimited genera: Xerocomus s. str., Phylloporus, Xerocomellus gen. nov., Hemileccinum gen. nov. and Pseudoboletus.Boletus badius and Boletus moravicus, also often treated as species of Xerocomus, are retained for the present in the genus Boletus. The differences between Xerocomus s. str., Phylloporus, Xerocomellus, Hemileccinum, Pseudoboletus and Boletus (which is related to this group of genera) are discussed in detail. Two new genera, Xerocomellus and Hemileccinum, and necessary new combinations of species names are proposed.

Armillaria socialis belongs to subgen. Desarmillaria. Its correct specific name (in comparison with the frequently used name A. tabescens) is discussed, and its detailed macro– and microscopic description and distribution in the Czech Republic and Europe are given. It is a thermophilic species occurring in Europe, USA, Japan and China. The northern distributional limit in Europe runs through Central Europe. In the Czech Republic, A. socialis occurs in thermophilic oak stands and also in alluvial forests. It was found on oaks, field maple and ash. A molecular study using sequence data from ribosomal DNA (ITS region) revealed a relatively high intraspecific genetic variation among sequences of A. socialis from various localities of the Czech Republic and France. The results resemble those published earlier from the USA.

A taxonomic survey of Central European genera of the familiesBoletaceae and Suillaceae with tubular hymenophores, including the lamellate Phylloporus, is presented. Questions concerning the delimitation of the bolete genera ar ediscussed. Descriptions and keys to the families and genera are based predominantly on anatomical characters of the carpophores. Attention is also paid to peripheral layers of stipe tissue, whose anatomical structur ehas not been sufficiently studied. The study of these layers, above all of the caulohymenium and the lateral stipestratum, can provide information important for a better understanding of relationships between taxonomic groups in these families. The presence (or absence) of the caulohymenium with spore-bearing caulobasidia on the stipe surface is here considered as a significant generic character of boletes. A new combination, Pseudoboletus astraeicola (Imazeki) Šutara, is proposed.

Gymnopilus igniculus Deneyer, P.-A. Moreau et Wuilbaut (Agaricales, Cortinariaceae), a violet-coloured species described in 2002 from Belgium, was found in the city of Ostrava, part Radvanice, Czech Republic. The fruitbodies grew on decaying wood of Fraxinus in a unique habitat - a burning coal mine dump, the surface of which reached about 45'C. The most important characters of the fruitbodies are the purplish to vinaceous- or reddish-brown colour of the pileus covering which is tomentose-fibrillose when young and fibrillose-squamulose to distinctly scaly at maturity, they ellow pileus ground, the absence of any ring, the whitish membranaceous to fibrillose veil, the stipe distinctly longitudinally purplish brown fibrillose on the dirty white or slightly violaceous ground, the context yellowish with reddish-violaceous tinge and fungoid smell, there latively large spores [8.0-9.5(-ll) X 6.0-6.8(-7.2) fim] with rough verrucose to verrucose-rugulose ornamentation, the variable shape of cheilocystidia and the absence of pleurocystidia. A detailed description of macro- and microcharacters, colour photographs of fresh fruitbodies and line drawings are provided. Some characters deviating from the Belgian collections are discussed and remarks on other European finds of Gymnopilus with violet colours are added.

In this seventh contribution dedicated to the knowledge of the myc oflora of Roman coastal woodlands, the authors describe two species collected in the Macchiagrande (RM) World Wildlife Fund oasis, i.e. Chaetocalathus craterellus and Crepidotus calolepis. The twospeciesare described in detail and illustrated with (colour photographs and ) line drawings; their taxonomy is briefly discussed.

This paper presents a survey of the pleurotoid genera belonging to the family Polyporaceae in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It is based on material deposited in Czech and Slovak herbaria as well as on published records of finds of the included species from the studied territory. For each species a short description is provided, accompanied by taxonomic or nomenclatoric notes in some problematic cases, and characters distinguishing it from related species are highlighted. Short notes about phenology, ecology, occurrence and distribution are included. The study is supplemented with distribution maps for individual species. A new combination, Neolentinus degener, is submitted instead of Neolentinus cyathi for mis (Schaeff.: Fr.) Redhead et Ginns.

abstract
Pholiota fusus (Batsch) Singer based on Agaricus fusxis Batsch is included in most floras of the 19th century and appears in some works of the 20th century. Recent records documented by herbarium material were published by Bon, Tjallingii-Beukers and Noordeloos. A careful revision of these collections showed that they most probably represent an aberrant robust for m of Hypholoma sublateritium. The original Agaricus fusus Batsch is hard to interpret. The species probably does not belong to Pholiota or not even to brown-spored fungi. Later interpretations of Pholiota fusus are dubious and cannot be verified due to the lack of any herbarium material. The concept of Pholiota fusus used by some authors of the 20th century follows that of Ricken. However, Flammula fusa sensu Ricken is probably a non-existing entity based on a mixture of characters taken from various spccies. There is no reliable evidence that a separate species of Pholiota corresponding to Batsch’s original description or various later interpretations really exists. Consequently, the name Pholiota fusus must be considered a nomen dubium and should be rejected.

The first results of the effects of some parameters on the composition of the fungal flora in Abies alba Miller woods are reported. Medium thinning and removal litter seems to have contributed to a slight increase in species diversity. Moreover, the results suggest that this type of study should be continued and extended to other areas, to obtain a large amount of data.

abstract
Cultivation experiments of 14 heterokaryotic strains of the edible and medicinally relevant mushroom Hericium erinaceus have shown a large variation in yield, quality and colour of the fruitbodies (Kirchhoff 1996). To determine the reasons for different fruitbody colours, phenoloxydases in the vegetative mycelium on agar and liquid media were investigated. It was shown that the colour of the fruitbodies correlates with the presence and activity of the phenoloxidase laccase. There is no correlation between fruitbody colour and presence of the phenoloxidase tyrosinase, responsible for browning of white button mushroom fruitbodies, Agaricus bisporus. The data obtained are important for selection or breeding of new H. erinaceus strains with good fruitbody qualities.

abstract
New species of Pholiota and Flammula described by Josef Velenovský, an important Czech mycologist, have been studied using the type specimens, original material and descriptions. All 16 taxa published by Velenovský have been revised: Pholiota decurrens, P.fallax, P. mammilata, P. maximovici, P. mucosa, P. nigrosetosa, P. pseudohypholoma, P. rigelliae, P. rostrata, P. salicina, P. sulphurea, Flammula granulosa, F. pholioti for mis, F. picea, F. squamulosa and F. vacini. The revision showed that most of them do not belong to the genus Pholiota in the modern sense and in fact represent species of the genera Cortinarius, Flammulaster, Galerina, Kuehneromyces, Pholiotina and Tricholomopsis. Of this group, six species are identical with earlier described taxa (Cortinarius bolaris, Flammulaster limulatus, Galerina triscopa, G. unicolor, Kuehneromyces mutabilis, Tricholomopsis rutilans) and the other are considered either insufficiently documented dubious species or should be studied by specialists of the aforementioned genera. All of Velenovský’s new species belonging to Pholiota in the present sense are identical with earlier described species: Pholiota albocrenulata, P. alnicola, P. flammans and P. gummosa. Consequently, no species of Pholiota s. str. described by Velenovský can be considered a “good” new species.

The results of mycocoenological studies carried out in calcicolous deciduous oak woods of central-southern Tuscany are reported. Comparison with there sults of studies in other for est ecosystems of the same area revealed exclusive differential species of deciduous oak woods and clarified the knowledge on mycocoenoses of central-southern Tuscany. The obtained in formation on individual species is also useful for understanding the relatively unexplored field of the ecology of macrofungi.

The paper presents a new opinion on the delimitation of Pholiota aurivella and Pholiota adiposa, which, however, correspondsto originaldescriptions of BatschandFries.Theconclusions are based on careful studies of fresh as well as herbarium material from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Finland and Austria. The true Pholiota aurivella (Batsch: Fr.) P. Kumm. proved to be a species growing on Salix and having a subviscid to dry and mat pileus surface, thick dark scales, predominantly clavate cheilocystidia, spores with a broad germ pore and abundant chrysocystidia. The true Pholiota adiposa (Batsch: Fr.) P. Kumm. is a fungus occurring on Fagus and many other deciduous trees, occasionally also on conifers, and has a strongly glutinous, lustrous pileus with thin scales, cheilocystidia of a different shape, spores with a narrower germ pore and rare chrysocystidia. A new neotype is being designated here for Pholiota aurivella instead of the neotype chosen by Jacobsson which proved to be in conflict with Fries’ protologue. Revision of the holotype of Pholiota cerifera (P. Karst.) P. Karst, showed that this species is identical with Pholiota aurivella.

Revision of the type material of Nemecomyces mongolicus Pilát 1933 (Ann. Mycol. 31: 54-55) has showed that this fungus is identical with Pholiota populnea (Pers.: Fr.) Kuyp. et Tjall., as suggested earlier by F. Kotlaba and Z. Pouzar in 1963. This fact is demonstrated by the agreement of macro- and microcharacters of these two species. Problematic characters as habitus of the fruitbodies, presence or absence of cheilocystidia and terrestrial growth of Nemecomyces mongolicus are discussed together with the possibility of occurrence of Pholiota populnea in northwestern Mongolia. This analysis confirmed conspecificity of N. mongolicus and Pholiota populnea too. The author prefers to include P. populnea and the closely related species P. heteroclita and P. comosa into the subgenus Hemipholiota Sing. ex Sing. because this position corresponds well to the real situation in the genus Pholiota s.l. This solution also prevents undesirable new combinations because when treated as members of a separate genus, the all aforementioned species should be transferred to Nemecomyces Pilát 1933. This name is older than the recently published generic name Hemipholiota (Sing.) Romagn. ex Bon 1986.

The authors have studied Bresadola’s type material of Omphalia kalchbrenneri Bres. from Italy as well as fresh and dried herbarium specimens from Bohemian an dMoravian localities. After studying the material and perusal of the literature, the conclusion was reached tha tfung idescribed by various authors as Omphalia kalchbrenneri Bres., Agaricus compressipes Peck and Omphalia graveolens Sev. Petersen are conspecific and the correct name for this fungus is Pseudoomphalina kalchbrenneri (Bres.) Sing. In the Czech Republic, this rare species is known from only six localities.

From multiple uses of fungi in early historic times, “early biotechnological processes” developed. Fungi were used here already e.g. for production of cheese, bread, wine, beer and other foodstuff. Based on these processes, fungi today have become one of the most important group of organisms in modern technology, where food, fodder and various metabolites such as antibiotics, enzymes, steroids etc. are produced on an industrial scale. An equally important role of fungi in biotechnology is also to be expected for the future where - in addition to existing uses - fungi will be increasingly used employing modern methods such as genetic engineering and will also new applications as in pollution control, biological control of pests, microbial leaching and even biotechnology.

The spore wall of five selected species of the Xerocomus group of Boletus was studied with a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The wall is composed of five layers in all the species studied: a very thin electron-dense outer layer 1 (ectosporium), a moderately electron-dense layer 2 (perisporium), a thick and amorphous electron-dense middle layer 3a (exosporium) that passes gradually into a thinner, granular or granular-fibrillar and moderately electron-dense layer *3b (episporium), and an almost electron-transparent layer 4 (endosporium). A smooth spore surface was found in Boletus pulverulentus and B. chrysenteron. A striate exosporium covered by the ectosporium and the perisporium was found in B. pruinatus, rough warts originating from a disrupted perisporium and ectosporium in B. parasiticus, and very fine warts composed of outgrowths of the ectosporium and part of the perisporium in B. subtomentosus. A species of an other group of the Boletales with conspicuous ornamentation (Strobilomyces strobilaceus) was examined as comparative material. The results of this TEM study are compared with SEM photographs of the spores of Xerocomus published by other authors, and methodologicalproblems with the examination of spore wall ornamentation are discussed. The data revealed confirm the high value of spore wall architecture and ornamentation in the taxonomy of this genus. The separation of B. parasiticus in a new genus Pseudoboletus Sutara is supported by its spore wall ornamentation that is unique in the Boletaceae.

The fungi of the order Agaricales s. l. and several families of ungilled fungi and gasteromycetes were studied in the beech woods of the southeastern part of the Sumava mountains and Sumava foothills (Czechoslovakia). Altogether, 230 species were recorded on 8 permanent plots (50 x 50 m) during the years 1988 - 1990. The terrestrial fungi were closely associated with a particular layer of the surface humus and substrate, and the lignicolous fungi were associated with wood in various stages of decay. The occurrence of mycorrhizal fungi was influenced above all by the mycorrhizal partner, altitude, and climate. The species composition, number of mycorrhizal and terrestrial species on the individual plots, and their share were determined by the humus type, microrelief, and the thickness of the detritus layer. The occurrence of lignicolous fungi was in close relation to the degree of naturalness of the wood, substrate diversity of the plot and the mesoclimate. The results are summarized in the mycosociological tables and compared by the use of cluster analysis and diagrams.

Mycelial cultures of 92 species belonging to 40 genera of saprotrophic basidiomycetous fungi (orders Agaricales, Aphyllophorales, Gastrosporiales, Lycoperdales and Nidulariales) were tested with respect to the production of extracellular hydrolytic enzymes and oxidoreductases (laccase, peroxidase, tyrosinase, diaminooxidase, proteases, amylases, urease, p-cresol oxidases and hydrolyse of tyrosine) using simple plate and spot tests. The results obtained were evaluated by means of factor analysis methods. Distribution of enzyme activities in individual species was discussed.

In the course of the years 1988–1991 the author used to visit large-scale greenhouses at Paskov near Ostrava (NE Moravia, Czechoslovakia) and surveyed not only the abundant growth of particularly higher fungi there, but in 1989 he tried to summarize the weight of biomass of the most frequent species. The results of the observation of biomass, frequency, abundance and phenology are presented in the tables. Altogether 95 macrofungi taxons, 1 species of Hyphomycetes and 1 species of Myxomycetes were recorded and they are given in the systematic summary, potentially with comments.

The paper deals with the nomenclatural status of 30 species of the genus Russula Pers. and 4 species of Lactarius S. F. Gray. These are results of a study carried out by the author during preparation of the book “Pilzflora der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik“ (1987, ed. H. Kreisel) and completed in 1986, i.e., after the manuscript was submitted for printing. Therefore, correct names of some species could not be included in the book (not even in its appendix) and are first published in this paper. The revision of the nomenclature was carried out with respect to the application and interpretation of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) adopted at the International Botanical Congress in Sydney, 1981. The paper introduces one new species Russula acetolens S. Rauschert, spec. nova, and one new combination Russula sanguinaria (Schum.) S. Rauschert, comb. nova.

Activity was found in 55.4% of strains. The study also included rare species previously not tested. Antibiotic activity is evaluated as a biochemical taxonomic feature.

In der Tschechoslowakei fehlt trotz wiederholter Bemühungen bisher die Meldepflicht der Pilzvergiftungen, alle Erkundungen machen mykotoxikologisch interessierte Spezialisten freiwillig. In zwei Tabellen sind aus vier Bezirken der böhmischen Länder (Südböhmen, Nordböhmen, Südmähren, Nordmähren) Vergiftungsfälle der Jahre 1985 und 1986 zusammengefasst, unterteilt nach 22 Ursachen (Pilzarten bzw. Gattungen). Im Jahre 1985 wurden in den angeführten Gebieten insgesamt 233, im Jahre 1986 157 hospitalisierte Vergiftungsfälle festgestellt. Diese Zahlen erfassen nicht alle Krankenhauseinweisungen nach Pilzvergiftungen in diesen Bezirken, ihre wirkliche Anzahl wird annähernd doppelt so gross sein.

The concentration factors for non-radioactive Rb, Cs, and radiocaesium in the fruit bodies of mushrooms were determined. The difference between the concentration factors of non-radioactive and radioactive Cs from the last fallout was one order of magnitude. No significant differences were found between the concentration factors of stable Rb and Cs for mushrooms and vascular plants. The highest accumulation of radiocaesium was observed in Boletus spp., Laccaria spp., Paxillus involutus, Cortinarius armillatus, and Lactarius rufus. The contribution of older weapon-test fallout and the more recent 1986 Chernobyl fallout could be differentiated by isotopic ratio. The radiation dose from consumption of 10 kg fresh mushrooms did not exceed 20% of the dose from natural background radiation in Czechoslovakia.

Flammulina fennae Bas from the Western Carpathians (Slovakia) is described and compared with its original diagnosis and with Flammulina velutipes (Curt.: Fr.) Sing. This is the first documented finding in Slovakia and the Carpathian region. The collection site is the most eastern European locality of this species to date. Differences from related species are discussed.

abstract
A review of applications of fungi in biotechnology from the old ages to the present times is presented. Origins of vine and beer fermentation as well as leavened bread making are lost in the mist of antiquity and records of the production of Roquefort cheese go back about a thousand years. On the other hand, commercial production of yeast began in the last century and the production of single-cell proteins (SCP) was born in our century. Nowadays, fungi are further used in commercial production of enzymes, organic acids, vitamins, antibiotics and plant growth regulators, in biotransformations of steroids and antibiotics, in the ephedrin synthesis and in preparation of other pharmacologically useful substances. Great achievements were obtained by applying classical genetic methods. Possibilities of the use of protoplast fusion and recombination, gene amplification or recombinant DNA technology using restriction enzymes are discussed.

Three European species of Xeromphalina Kühn. et Maire ap. Konr. et Maubl. (X. cauticinalis, X. fellea, X. campanella) are treated; their descriptions, illustrations of macroscopic and microscopic features are given and a key is provided (also for X. cornui). Their taxonomic position, geographic distribution and ecology are discussed. X. cauticinalis is a new species for Czechoslovakia and X. fellea for Sweden and the U.S.A. Caucasian collection of X. fellea represents the fourth record for the U.S.S.R. X. cauticinalis var. acida O. K. Miller is synonymized with X. fellea.

The surface and immediate surroundings of fungal hyphae affected by their activity is termed the „hyphosphere“. Differences between microorganisms colonizing the hyphosphere and those colonizing a substrate is termed „hyphosphere effect“. The more extensive area of fungal effect on substrate, on the surface and surroundings of fruit-bodies, i.e. the environment affected by the activity of fungi is termed „mycosphere“. The nomenclature proposed is in agreement with the classification of the phytosphere of higher plants. The brief literary survey presents data on incidence of microorganisms in hyphosphere and on their importance, taking into account the results obtained in the Czechoslovak research institutions.

Two new resupinate Hymenomycetes (Corticiaceae, Sistotrematoideae) are described: Elaphocephala iocularis Pouz., gen. et spec. nov., similar to the species of the genus Galzinia Bourd., but differing in strange basidiospores with two ramified branches on their top; Galzinia forcipata Pouz., spec. nov., occurring together with the previous species is close to Galzinia geminispora Olive, but differs in more slender spores. Both new species were collected in Central Bohemia (Czechoslovakia). A new subgenus Haplogalzinia is proposed for three species of the genus Galzinia.

Yeasts were found in the mouths of 81.4% of persons with removable dentures; Candida albicans (alone or in combination with other yeasts) in 62.9%. Yeast incidence varied from 66% (31–40 years) to 95% (71–80 years). Findings are listed for tongue, teeth, and dentures. In dentures younger than one year, 49% were yeast-negative, while 21% showed massive/abundant yeast presence. In older than 4 years, 25% were negative and 55% positive. Clinical thrush was observed in 1.4%. The study also considered pathological changes under dentures, tongue and tonsil appearance, frequency of denture use, and use of antibiotics, corticoids, and cytostatics.

Marasmius quercophilus Pouz. spec. nov. is most frequently identified with Marasmius splachnoides (Horném, ex Fr.) Fr. The original M. splachnoides is, however, a completely different fungus and as our species on oak leaves has no name it should be described as a new species. It is closely related to Marasmius androsaceus (L. ex Fr.) Fr. but it differs in pale pileus and lamellae and also by occurrence on leaves of Quercus and Castanea.

In addition to the description, ecology and distribution in Czechoslovakia, results referring to the taxonomic position of M. luteoalcalina Sing. are also mentioned. Based on the authors’ study of the Singer’s type specimen, the species was identified with M. renati Quél. Thus the name M. luteoalcalina Sing. sensu Kühner is considered to be synonymous with M. viridimarginata P. Karst. The name M. alcalina (Fr.) Kumm. is proposed by the present authors to be rejected and listed as a rejected name in “Nomina rejicienda”.

Macrochemical colour reactions of benzidine were studied mainly with the species of genera Agaricus, Amanita, Lactarius, Russula, and Tricholoma. With the genus Lactarius, differences were found between the reactions of the milk and the context. Oxidation enzymes, which give a blue-green, blue, or black reaction, were detected in many species of the genera Agaricus, Lactarius, and Russula, whereas with Amanita and most species of Tricholoma they were absent. In the case of the genus Russula, only species with a burning taste give a yellow or ochre reaction. The reactions of benzidine are suitable as complementary characteristics for the determination of some mutually similar species.

The contents of ash and seven trace elements were determined in Xerocomus badius, Ixocomus variegatus and Cantharellus cibarius. The collection included 42 samples from 23 localities. Copper content ranged from 23 to 56 mg/kg dry matter, manganese from 16 to 54, zinc from 95 to 192, cobalt from 1.4 to 2.3, iron from 106 to 1460, cadmium from 0.7 to 1.5 and nickel from 3.3 to 5.0. The content of biogenic elements is species-dependent: Cantharellus cibarius showed high manganese and cobalt; Ixocomus variegatus had high iron and low copper; Xerocomus badius had high zinc. No species-dependent relationship was found for cadmium and nickel. Correlations were observed between copper, zinc and manganese levels.

The author provides an overview of the fungal flora of the hill “Semická hůrka” (District of Nymburk) in central Polabí, covered by subxerophilous oak forest with fragments of the Querco-Carpinetum bohemicum community. On the southern slope, communities of the order Prunetalia mix with substitute communities from the Cirsio-Brachypodion pinnati alliance. The location is a notable site of thermophilic fungi in central Polabí. A proposal for protection of this site is attached.

From 743 wild mammals representing 3 orders (Insectivora, Chiroptera and Rodentia), 7 families, 17 genera and 29 species, a total of 1584 fungi from 76 genera were isolated, of which 18.4% were keratinolytic fungi. Several dermatophytes (Microsporum cookei, M. persicolor, and Trichophyton ajelloi) and other pathogenic fungi for humans and animals (Aspergillus fumigatus, Cephalosporium acremonium) were detected at low frequency. A comparison between the fungal flora of mammal fur and bird plumage showed both similarities and differences in species and genera composition.

The Laboratory of Experimental Mycology, Institute of Microbiology, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague, takes care for a culture collection of Basidiomycetes, which now includes 130 species (280 strains). The cultures were mainly obtained by the explant method from fresh fruit-bodies collected in their natural localities in Czechoslovakia, some of them were isolated from basidiospores or from substrate mycelium. A small part of mycelial cultures was obtained on an exchange basis from various international institutions. The mycelial cultures are used for purposes of investigating their physiology of growth and biochemical activities.

In this paper the content of the trace element cobalt was determined in 15 species of common edible mushrooms from three localities of the South Bohemia region. The content varied in the range from 0.3 to 4 mg Co/kg of dry matter. The highest content of cobalt was found in Xerocomus subtomentosus (L. ex Fr.) Quél., Agaricus campestris L. ex Fr. and Ixocomus variegatus (Sow. ex Fr.) Quél., the lowest one in Xerocomus badius (Fr.) Kühn. ex Gilb. The determined content in the same species of mushroom found on different localities differed, what proved the influence of every particular place where a mushroom was found. The possible factors are discussed.

A method of fluorescence staining of hyphal nuclei in 32 species of fungi is described. It also permits observation of nuclei in conidia and septa. The latter can be safely distinguished by combining fluorescence under incident UV light with phase contrast under penetrating light. Rod-shaped particles, 22–28 × 119 nm in size, and isometric particles, 30 nm in diameter, were electron microscopically detected in fruit bodies of Armillariella mellea, Laccaria laccata, and Inocybe dulcamara bearing hymeniform proliferations. The particles resemble virions. If they are indeed virions, it is not yet clear whether one or two viruses are involved. In the case of virosis, a name for a complex of viruses causing the proliferation of agaric mushrooms might be used. The disease was transmitted to Laccaria amethystina and Pholiota mutabilis by watering with a suspension of homogenized fruit bodies of Armillariella mellea. The proliferation is therefore presumed to be a virus disease.

After consuming a meal composed of equal parts of Suillus piperatus and Armillariella mellea, two middle-aged men experienced symptoms resembling an allergic reaction, with itching being the main complaint. The report suggests that although Armillariella mellea is generally considered edible when properly prepared, Suillus piperatus is not, and may have caused the reaction. The case adds to the understanding of pseudoallergic syndromes caused by mushrooms, especially involving species with disputed edibility.

Originally described from North America, this is its first European record. The morphological and physiological behavior of cultures of the basidiomycete Oudemansiella mucida, a producer of antifungal antibiotics, was studied. The fungus does not form vegetative spores in culture. Mycelial growth was investigated under static and submerged conditions, and fruitbodies were successfully cultivated in the laboratory. Fruiting occurred after 4–10 weeks under specific conditions (substrate, temperature, humidity, light). The basidiospores remained viable for several months. Sexuality is governed by the mechanism of homogenic tetrapolar incompatibility.

The Swedish mycologist E. M. Fries described the mushroom Tricholoma colossus in 1836 as remarkable for its large size and tough flesh. He called it “maximus et durissimus Agaricus in orbe” – the largest and hardest gilled fungus in the world. Later detailed descriptions and illustrations confirmed this species, which has been found sporadically across Europe. The first correct report in Czechoslovakia is credited to R. Veselý in 1930. An earlier mention by J. Velenovský (1920) is considered a misidentification, possibly of Hygrophorus russula. The paper reviews past reports and confirms T. colossus as rare but valid in the region.

The authors report on higher fungi of the Žofínský Virgin Forest near Nové Hrady in Southern Bohemia, the oldest forest reserve in Bohemia. Covering 97 ha at 740–830 m elevation, the forest contains mostly Fagus silvatica, Abies alba, and Picea excelsa. During two excursions, 227 species of higher fungi were collected: 131 Agaricales, 67 Aphyllophorales, 17 Discomycetes, 12 Pyrenomycetes, and 10 Myxomycetes. One new species, Collybia terginoides, and one new variety, Paxillus panuoides var. rubrosquamulosus, are described. Three species were reclassified. New species for Bohemia are marked with an asterisk.

Although this species is easily identifiable and taxonomically well-defined, it has only been recorded from a few locations, mainly in moist, birch-associated habitats on silicate soils. It is more frequent in northern and central Europe and rare in the south.

The formation and development of plant and fungal communities in the hills near Brno are primarily influenced by microclimatic conditions. The paper describes communities on Horka Hill with different combinations of phanerogams and higher fungi, shaped by exposure and vegetation structure. The study shows how distinct microclimates lead to specific combinations of fungal species, complementing phytocenological characterization of vegetation.
